    Hello!

I have just discovered this website today. The recipes look delicious!

My mom has early stages of diverticulitis -- "DiverticulOSIS." She is supposed to avoid nuts and seeds so that they don't get caught in her intestines -- it's super-painful when that happens!

I am wondering if Nut Flours are considered "safe" to eat for people with this condition? I've been trying to do some searching online and am coming up with nothing! Are the nut flours considered ground finely enough so that she doesn't have to worry about getting intestinal pains?

I have made really delicious gluten-free lemon squares using Chestnut flour in the cookie/crust part. The chestnut flour seems like it would be okay for her to eat, but I don't want to have her try any in case it can still cause a problem for her.

Does anybody out there have any information on this? Thanks in advance!

    -Renee.

I don't have any hard proof, nor am I a doctor, but my husband has diverticulitis -- "DiverticulOSIS" and was told the same. Yet, he was told to eat lots of high fiber foods, such as whole wheat. As long as the nut flours are ground finely he has had no problems. It's been at least 5 years since his diagnosis and he has been eating my nut flour baked goods without any problems. Not one trip back to the ER or doctor.
I can't say how your mom would react, I'm just letting you know how he did. She would have to decide for herself if she wanted to risk eating the flours.
I can't imagine anyone would have done a study yet to see if nut flours are ok for this problem. I'd be interested if you find any.

I've known a few people who have had diverticulitis and it never made sense to me to know that the cause to be related to a poor diet, particularly a fiber-poor diet, but that nuts are supposed to be off-limits. Nuts are fiber-rich. I googled "diverticulitis nuts" and found this on WebMD.

I would imagine that like many digestive disorders that a nutrient-dense, fiber-rich diet would alleviate at least some of the symptoms, even if it didn't reverse the condition. And of course, your mother will be the best judge of what foods make her feel well and which don't. The only way to know for sure is to try.

Thanks for that, colormepink. I didn't know of any studies on nuts. Now I have proof when the rest of the family asks questions.
