Has anyone seen the movie Food Inc? I watched it today. Much of what I heard was familiar, but it was well done and a good reminder to me of why we joined a local organic vegetable CSA a few years ago. The movie is disturbing, and anyone concerned about feeding their family well, especially in the US, should watch it. If you have netflix, you can watch it instantly on your PC or TV.

We rented it from Netflix a couple of weeks ago, and like you, much of it was familiar since I do a lot of reading at mercola.com. Still, it was quite depressing (and angering) to put some visuals to what I've read. I was glad my family watched it so that they can see for themselves without thinking mom is such a fanatic about things. ;-) I'd like to see this one since it at least gives hope! (Not available on DVD yet, though.)

Have you found good local sources for meat, eggs, and veggies? Where do you live? I visited the fresh site and signed up for email notices. It looks good. Sounds like you and I have lots in common.

I saw the movie a few weeks ago, too. I agree with both of you that it wasn't a lot of new information. I still always like to learn anything new that I can and be reminded periodically as to why I am as "picky" as I am. :) I have found that I really enjoy buying fruits, veggies, and eggs from our local farmers market in the warmer months. (I am in Michigan and although the market is open all year round, there isn't anything locally grown in the winter.) I haven't yet bought much meat at the farmers market but many people do and am thinking of giving it a try. - Just go to Whole Foods for that as of now. I'll tell you though, Food Inc. has me thinking about making my dog's food. I used to for a while but switched to high-quality, organic, commercial foods, and now I've been feeling inspired to go back to making it again. We'll see... Thanks, mymanzwife, for the movie recommendation! - Looks interesting!!

Lisa, I live about 40 min. east of Columbus, Ohio. Like, Katie H, we try to get to the local farmers market during the warmer months, but I've mostly had to rely on our limited choices in local grocery stores for meats, produce and eggs. I try to buy as much organic produce as possible and always organic eggs.
As for meat, my husband has twice tried to contact someone when he noticed a sign posted with a phone number for grassfed beef, but they never returned his calls. This has happened a few times here in our area when we try to locate a local source for these things--frustrating. I've recently searched more thoroughly at the Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association and see that I have a couple of choices for grassfed beef, but I'd have to make a 30-40 min. drive for them. It'd be worth it in the end, I suppose! Do you buy grassfed meats?
So, as it is for now, I've at least been buying hormone/antibiotic free beef, poultry and pork for several years but definitely would like more options.

Yes, we eat grass fed beef that our inlaws raise for us. I have found a farm here in TN that raises free range chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, cows and turkeys only on grass and hay, and whatever they find in the pasture in nature. I am going to order some meat and eggs from them this week. They ship via Fed X. Their website is http://www.peacefulpastures.com. The bacon is sugar cured. The other products have no sugar added.
Our local veggie farmers have started using hoop houses to grow veggies in the winter. I don't know if this would work in OH or MI. I also buy local honey when it is available.

Charmaine - Do you ever go to your farmers markets in the off-season? Although I don't go much now there are still farmers there carrying grass-fed meat and organic eggs all year 'round. May be worth checking if you haven't.
Lisa - Hoop houses - good idea! Like you said though, don't know if it would work in OH or MI. It's been pretty cold lately. I love our local honey, too!!

Organic eggs come from chickens that are fed grain (like corn). The grain is organic. Free range eggs come from from chickens that can roam freely outside and eat what they find in nature, the way chickens are supposed to eat. We are working towards getting all our eggs from free range hens in the most natural habitat possible. (They are not always available in the quantity that we need. We need to have several suppliers!)

Katie H, Our two local farmers markets are closed after October and don't start back up until May or June. I was checking out eatwild.com last night and found two sources for grassfed meats that are fairly close by, so was pleased about that.
Lisa, how lucky for you that you have in-laws for your grassfed beef! I also went to the site you provided and it's nice that they ship and all, but it was a bit overwhelming looking at their shipping policy--have to pay for the cooler, have to pay for the dry ice, you can try to have Fed Ex ground at 50% less shipping BUT that's at your own risk, etc. After reading that, I thought it would be more convenient even if I had to drive some distance for the meat. But, hopefully, my new local sources will work out instead--I still have to give them a call. Let's hope they're there or will return my call. ;)
And, yes, that's right about organic eggs being fed grain--at least it's non-GMO grains. :) Still, the available quantity for the free range eggs was the issue for me when I e-mailed someone local. I was on a fairly long waitlist, and so that discouraged me and I didn't pursue further.

How about Bison? Do you guys eat that? It's supposed to be more lean than beef, more like wild game. I've heard of a couple local sources here.
We are in between cows from my inlaws, so we got a variety package yesterday from Peaceful Pastures. We are eager to try the different meats and chicken. We actually have Mahi Mahi on the menu for tonight, with a mango salsa! We try to eat fish at least 2 times per week.
