    Hi,

I am not gluten intolerant but I wanted to know if there are any health benefits for me if I go with a gluten-free diet. Will I still get all of the nutrients/vitamins my body needs, like calcium, fiber, etc?

    Thanks,
    Lauren

Eating gluten-free doesn't automatically mean you are eating healthy. You can eat many gluten-free foods and still not being eating healthy foods or in appropriate proportions. We were designed to eat a variety of foods, and being gluten-free myself has forced me to challenge my eating and cooking habits and has opened my eyes to many new foods and recipes I wouldn't ever have tried in my past. That is what I try to bring to my friends and family- that dinner can be colorful, delicious, and satisfying without dinner rolls, or tortillas, or battered/ breaded, for example. If you approach gluten-free from that aspect, you will most definitely find plenty of ways to get the appropriate nutrients and fiber. You wouldn't get all you need just from wheat anyway. But if you are simply swapping gluten-free cookies for regular, you really aren't going to see much benefit to your health. Mindful eating, whether you are gluten-free or not is key. Anyone else want to add anything?

That makes sense. Thanks for replying. I would like to stay away from processed foods to be healthier but I know that every now and again I'll want something sweet. If I want cookies/cake I might as well eat the store bought stuff if I want to indulge?

That all depends on what you can live with. I believe homemade tastes better and usually is made with a better ingredient list than the ready-made stuff and the recipes here are definitely more nutritionally sound than store-bought. But I like being in the kitchen and it is worth the effort and investment to me to buy these ingredients and take the time to make my indulgences. That's my choice, your choice may be different, and that's okay, too.
