Giveaway: The Kind Diet

kind diet alicia silverstoneI’ve been a huge fan of AIicia Silverstone since I first saw her in the teen flick Clueless many years ago. So I was tickled last fall when she featured my Vegan Herb Crackers recipe on her food blog The Kind Life.

Although Silverstone and I do food differently (she is a devoted vegan, I follow a modified Paleo eating plan); I am quite an admirer of how she has used her celebrity to promote social causes. When her publisher sent me a copy of her book last fall, I was eager to both see it and review it. The Kind Diet is not just a cookbook, it is a manual for treading lightly on this planet, something to which Silverstone has devoted her life.

While Silverstone does use gluten in this book, there are many recipes that are naturally gluten free. My favorite recipes are those for a vegan Caesar Salad, yummy Artichoke Dip, a refreshing Pomegranate Lime Iced Tea, Gomashio (a Japanese condiment that I also have a recipe for on this site), and Alicia’s Magical Healing Soup. I also love Silverstone’s recipe for Ume-Sesame Dressing (perfect for those that are not only gluten free, but also on the candida diet).

Even though it is not a gluten free cookbook, there is much goodness in this tome of recipes and I am happy to be giving a copy away today to one lucky winner. Just leave a comment below (by Friday 5/20/2011 at 12 noon MST) telling me what your favorite vegan dish is. This giveaway is open to everyone everywhere.

If you need some inspiration here are some of my favorite vegan recipes from this website:

Stay tuned tomorrow for my veganalicious nettles pesto recipe made from wild edibles.

Update: the winner of the giveaway for a copy of The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone is Katie!

I am definitely not a vegan, but I do love natural foods and much of my diet consists of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Roasted Sweet Potatoes, which I learned to cook from a Cooks Illustrated recipe, are one of my absolute favorites – a nice crisp exterior and so creamy and sweet inside!

  2. My favourite vegan food is raw cheesecake. Not very healthy, but SO ridiculously delicious!

  3. I love her book and her positive attitude! My fave vegan foods generally tend to be naturally vegan things…veggie sushi, or any bean-based dish. Yum!

  4. Melie

As a midwest girl through and through, it’s been a revelation to discover that I don’t have to have a meat in order to call the food on my table a meal. Since that epiphany, I’ve enjoyed not only meatless meals, but meatless days. Salads with vinagrette dressings are my go-to for those times. My favorite being a simple spinach salad with strawberries and walnuts with rasberry vinagrette. Yum!

  5. Melissa

Sunbutter Ice cream! Good grief that stuff is so delicious! Mel

  6. sam

i am definitely not vegan either. if your espresso power bars count as vegan then that is definitely my favourite recipe!

  7. Kalyn

Any kind of Larabar, homemade or otherwise.

  8. Kaylan

My favorite vegan dish has got to be a pizza with garlic oil, thinly-sliced potatoes, rosemary and onions! MMM.

  9. Barbara

i’m not a vegan but i’m thinking about being a vegan for the next month or so – so this would be great for me to cook vegan…

  10. Lisa Stafford @ lisastafford.net

I love fudge babies and I am ready to make some more. They are better than Larabars, although I’ll eat those on the run when needed!

I also love Tabouli Salad made with Quinoa, and served with homemade hummus and raw veggies. I am a modified Paleo eater now, so this meal is a rare treat.

  11. I have four favorites. One for breakfast. One for lunch. One for dinner. And one for dessert. :)

B: Oatmeal with peanut butter and glorious toppings of all kinds
    L: Hummus and daiya wrap
    D: Vegetable curry
D: Coconut milk ice cream – chocolate chip cookie dough or mocha almond fudge!

  12. Teresa

  39. since being diagnosed with celiac disease over 6 years ago, I have come to appreciate and love all kinds of gluten free and vegan foods. I have learned so much about food and nutrition since becoming gluten free. I also love to support companies and products that have a low footprint on the environment, and many gluten free companies such as Natures Path Organics have such great philosophies behind their businesses.

one of my favorite gluten free and vegan dishes is brown rice or wild rice bowls mixed with chopped vegetables like tomato, celery, cucumber, red pepper, cilantro and avocado.

I loved reading Alicia’s story and getting the facts in a gentle, yet encouraging way, not boasting that this is THE diet for everyone. She even admits that it took her a few times to go completely vegan. I could totally relate to her, plus she’s Cher from Clueless!

  96. Ecomama Says @ ecomamasays.com

Raw marinated kale salad with raw garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and sea salt. Appeals to both vegans and raw foodists, and even carnivores and children gobble it up when I bring it to potlucks! I could eat an entire bunch of kale in one sitting with this recipe, and often do!

One of my favorite meals is a mixed greens salad with chopped kalamata olives, walnuts and whatever raw veggies I happen to have topped with this amazing basil dressing I make. I could drink that plain and be happy. The basil in my garden can’t keep up with my demand for it.

  106. Athena

I grew up loving macaroni and cheese. I thought my days of mac and cheese were over and done with, until one night experimenting, I made the sauce from coconut milk (so delicious unsweeteneed) and Daiya Mozzerella and poured over Tinkayada brown rice pasta shells and oh my goodness…..its a bowlful of yum….

  107. Gina

My all time favorite vegan recipe is from Karina at glutenfreegoddess@bloodspot.com. I make her Santa Fe Pumpkin Chowder http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2007/01/santa-fe-pumpkin-chowder.html which is fabulous all by itself, but then I dice avocado and spoon it into each steaming hot bowl. 123. Suzanne

Hummus. And desserts made with dates and nuts.

  124. Vicki

I read the Kind Diet from the library and it really opened my eyes. I would love my own copy so that I could lend it to people to show them the horrors of the meat industry and how sugar causes chaos in your body.

My favorite vegan (and gluten free) dish has to be Quinoa, made a million different ways depending on the influence from the rest of the plate. I can make it lean Italian, Indian, all American with a simple change of ingredients.

  125. I’m very into socca right now. It’s a chickpea flour ‘pancake’ that is naturally gluten-free, and chock full of yummy. Not being a purist, I tend to throw in things that traditional socca makers would probably frown at — sauteed wild leeks or sauteed tomatoes and chili powder. It’s also lovely with nothing more than some black pepper and a pinch of cumin.

  126. Vaneta

My families favorite recipe comes from a cookbook by Robin Robertson, Spicy African sweet Potato Stew; with slight modification it has even become our favorite sauce over steamed spaghetti squash!

  127. Terry

My favorite vegan lunch is a whole wheat wrap with hummus and tabouli, with plenty of crunchy fresh veggies (as a short-cut I buy the broccoli slaw bag from Trader Joe’s and use that in wraps and salads – its broccoli, cabbage and carrots but all the chopping is done for you) and my favorite vegan snack are Alicia’s brown rice krispy treats – with brown rice syrup, no sugar, they are fantastic. But I’m assuming both those answers will change as I explore more vegan meals. It’s fun to explore new things, and Alicia’s book is a great way to do that.

  128. My favorite vegan dish is taking frozen bananas and giving them a whirl in the food processor. The best and quickest dessert ever!

  129. domestic diva

  145. Angie

Our family LOVES sweet potato enchiladas! We skip the turkey and add whole black beans. The recipe comes from Gluten Free Godess. Karina’s blog has a wealth of vegan and gluten free recipes our family loves, but this one is the top favorite!

My favorite vegan dish is my go-to dish for unexpected dinner guests (everyone loves it!) or when I want to cook for the next day at work.

I get bored easily by eating the same dish too often, but I never get tired of: stir fried tofu with garlic/sesame/ginger/chili, veggies of choice and brown rice noodles. Yum!

  153. Jan Magness

This book looks yummy. My niece is vegan and I look forward to learning more about it.

  154. Fran Danner

I’ve been living Alicia’s kind diet for 6 months now and love it. I modified it with egg in any baked items. But that’s it. I’m about 95% gluten free since my DH is 100% gluten free. I have a piece of bread once in a while.

Would love to have the book for my own. Mine is borrowed.

    Thanks for sharing.
    Fran

  155. Anouschka

I would say butternut from the bbq with garlic oil. mjammie!!

  156. Rachel

I am not vegan, but many in my family are allergic to dairy, including myself, so I am always looking for yummy foods that don’t include dairy. I love highly flavorful ethnic foods such as quinoa tabbouleh and hummus. Especially in the summertime, it’s a very refreshing meal. It’s really yummy with Nut-Thins almond crackers too. Mmm-mmm!

  157. Rhonda

My favorite vegan recipe(so far) was made last night at my cooking class. It was a nut sauce made from hazelnuts, lemon zest and juice, water, pear saki and finished with mint. It was served with steeped carrots and asparagus. Yummy!
I would love to have a copy of The Kind Diet. Its on my wish list on Ammazon.
    many Blessings,
    Rhonda

  158. Fran Danner

Forgot my favorite vegan dish: bean burritos on rice flour tortillas w/gracomole & vegan sour cream.

  159. Regina

I am certainly not a vegan. I’m a Paleo girl through and through, but I always find myself attracted to the simple, wholesome bars and such that are labeled “vegan”. The ingredients are far more pure and simple than anything else; no nasty additives.
And as for my favorite vegan recipe, it would actually have to be my own Paleo chocolate chip recipe, which just happens to be vegan and has been a total lifesaver since I gave up grains and just needed a cookie!

  160. Melissa

Made your Fudge Babies recipe last week, loved them. Also, I love any Raw Truffles recipes, I think they are the perfect snack. Thanks for all your delicious recipes, I love that they are quick, easy, and delicious.

  161. Ashley Fugett

Black Bean soup…. anytime, anywhere. It’s naturally vegan too!

  162. My favourite vegan dish would have to be kitchari, with extra veggies. It’s the dish I always go to when I’m feeling unwell from other foods (such as dairy) and if I’m battling a virus. It’s light, the mung beans provide protein and I always feel better after eating it.

  163. Laura

Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream is divine! My three year old loves it! I would love to get Alicia’s book as I am always looking for inspiration to feed my family of four.

  164. Julia

I would love to have her book!

  165. Joan M

My fave dish is refried beans with avocado on top. Thank you!

  166. Rhea

We love zucchini walnut crackers made in the dehydrator! So good, and they taste like they have butter in them when they don’t.

  167. My favorite vegan dish is spicy quinoa with roasted sweet potatoes, avocado, and roasted tomatillo dressing. It’s sweet and spicy and creamy all at the same time.

  168. Marlo Duncan @ Don'thaveone

My favorite involves thai flavors! In fact, Elana’s thai soup wins my vote! I make a thai vegan soup that doesn’t have the coconut milk in it but uses coconut water and I add the chopped coconut meat for the “noodles” in the soup. Anything with cilantro, ginger, garlic and a bit of spice is my fave!

  169. ANNE IOCCO

My favorite vegan dish is my version of a Brazilian stew, featuring dark orange sweet potatoes (unpeeled), black beans and fresh mango. Everyone I’ve ever made it for just loves it. Easy one-pot meal and extremely nutritious.

  170. Leslie

I know this is so ordinary and every now, but I love hummus. I love it anyway you make it!

  171. Julie

My favorite vegan snack is edamame. I remember first trying it, while living in Hawaii. I don’t recall what the kamaainas (locals) called it.. I have been thrilled to find it back here on the mainland. Our son, is gfcf, no soy, no egg. We are constantly trying new recipes. It would be fun to win Alicia’s cookbook!

  172. Julie

Gosh, pretty much any vegetable soup! I make one at least once a week.

  173. Naomi

My absolute favorite is so simple. Ice cream. Frozen bananas blended in food processor plus flavor. I love it with strawberries (fresh or frozen) put in at the last minute or peanut or almond butter. Perhaps a sprinkle of cinnamon.

  174. Linda North

    Baked sweet potatoes

  175. Caroline

Delicious home made hummus! Always a hit when we have guests.

  176. While my husband and I are not vegan, we do eat vegan at least half the week just because many of our favorite recipes are. One of my favorites is a tomato soup with brown rice, roasted garlic and greens. So tasty!

  177. Judy Freeman

    Judy 5/19/2011
Hi Elana, I love recieving your e-mails and also your book The Gluten Free with Almond Flour. It is fabulous! I found this receipe Kiwi Fruit Tart with Almond Crust. It becomes vegan if you substitute th 1/4 cup butter for cold pressed oil. I have wanted this book for sometime and could not believe this opportunity to win it. The Kiwi Tart got a ton of compliments and it is a beautiful presentation.

  178. CARLA SCHROEDER

I love your recipe for the spicy power bars…Yum!

  179. Diane M.

The pumpkin pie ice cream recipe sounds amazing! I love all things pumpkin and will have to try this recipe soon.

  180. Coconut Milk Icecream has got to be my vegan indulgence!

  181. Theresa Donohue

I am not a vegan also but loooove some of the dishes. One of my favorite vegan dishes is a mock creamy broccoli soup made with homemade chicken stock, frozen broccoli pieces and onion. Boil all until tender, put in a blender, bammm, you have a creamy broccoli soup…awesome!

  182. Susan

I read this book about 6 months ago (from the library) would really enjoy owning this book – the recipes are great (I have prepared many of them)- the information is really good – we lean heavily towards vegan.

  183. Meredith Chamorro

Well, I am a vegan, so there are so many dishes from which to choose! Lately I’ve been drinking lots of green smoothies and quinoa pilafs, varying them depending on what is in the fridge!

  184. Elizabeth Richardson

I like her too!! Always interested to find new recipes even tho I do have to watch for gluten and yeast – me two worst enemies!

    Great give away – Elizabeth

  185. I’m so excited about this book! I was vegan for two years and I adored it, but when I was diagnosed with Late Stage Lyme Disease, my doctor asked me to incorporate animal protein back into my diet for a while. I’m currently happy to report though that I’ve gotten the green light to head back toward veganism again, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. My vegan dishes are my all-time favorites!

My favorite dish is roasted beet chips. It’s simple but so delightfully tasty. Beets sliced paper thin and drizzled in grapeseed oil. So yummy! I learned my roasting ways from you, Elana. :)

  186. Kelly

My favorite dish period is anything with chocolate, so I’ll go with Chocolate Tofu Mousse. I use Tosca Reno’s recipe, with my own tweaks.

  187. nina

Right now it is lentil soup.

  188. Eeva

Fudge babies are definitely my favorite vegan recipe. They are really easy to make and so good!

  189. Mrs. Whatsit

I have always liked Alicia Silverstone, and am curious about her book — would love to win a copy!

My favorite vegan recipes are those that are natural/by definition vegan. Grilled broccoli and kale with carmelized onions have been family favorites for awhile now. Even my youngest (6yo) LOVES kale. How cool is that?!

  190. I like vegan food that is naturally vegan. Things that are nut based, or veggie based. I do like your recipe for spicy power bars as well.

  191. Heather

My favorite vegan dish right now is tahini-tella from the Sketch-Free Vegan on your gluten free bread 2.0 toasted. So tasty!

  192. I have many, many favorite vegan dishes, but perhaps the one I cannot live without (on a daily basis) is hummus!!! I love hummus. Sometimes I buy it and sometimes I make my own — usually with chickpeas but I’ve also made white bean and black bean hummus. Delicious! I eat it every day!

  193. Kristine

Vegan nachos and cheese. Vegan diner food is a great indulgence.

  194. Ruth

I read here because I have a slight intolerance to wheat, and a dairy allergy. Many many of Elena’s recipes work with this. Since I don’t eat meat at night, as it causes me to awake at 2am, I would LOVE a vegan recipe book :-)

  195. Oh it would have to be a toss up between the Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream and the Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream. Two of my absolute favorite things. I wonder if I can combine them. Hmmmmm…. That book of Alicia’s sounds wonderful!

  196. Donna

It’s the Sunbutter Ice Cream that I absolutely MUST vote for!

  197. Gretchen

My absolute favorite vegan recipe is simple as pie, but oh so good (and much better for you than pie!). It’s Elana’s lemon kale chips: http://www.elanaspantry.com/lemon-kale-chips/
They are the absolute best! Ever since my husband had a heart procedure for clogged arteries, he’s been eating a vegan diet. I’ve pretty much joined him, but am gluten free, too, and sometimes eat meat. Regardless, I make lemon kale chips almost every night. They’re our treat! So delicious!

  198. Lindsay

    I love raw kale chips!

  199. Laurel Holler

My favorite vegan recipe is a Butternut Squash Soup that you top with bananas. Great winter dish.

  200. Christina

I LOVE your Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies! Those are a staple in my house!

  201. Sandy Austin

My favorite vegan lunch sandwich is my S&P sandwich (I’m s stock market trader). Try spinach and peanut butter for your S & P. It’s a wonderful combination. I alternate that sandwich with a garbonza bean wrap. Rinsed garbonza beans, carrot, broccoli, celery in a processor pulsed for a couple of times give a chunky mix that can beput in a lettuce leaf or a pita pocket for a great vegan lunch.

  202. Andrina

i am not Vegan but I am addicted to vegetables and fruits, these combined with grains (especially quinoa, yams, sweet (or regular) potatoes. I love to make up creative dishes and unique combination. I have looked at AS’s cookbook before I would love to add it to my collection.

  203. Kathy

I would love to Have Alicia Silverstone’s book. She has some very healthy recipes in her book that would be fun to try. We try to eat Vegan several times a week. I like changing my routine, and trying new recipes. Thank you, Elana.

  205. Amie

Although we have not tried any recipes from The Kind Diet book our family loves so many recipes in your book and one of our favorite vegan ones would be any of the spiced or candied nuts and vanilla almond butter. http://ohsheglows.com/2011/03/16/carrot-raisin-spelt-berry-salad-with-cumin-and-cilantro/

  214. Sara Jean

Not a vegan, but I eat a LOT of vegan food. Recently I made a Tuscan white bean soup that was TO DIE FOR. It includes the usual: carrots, celery, onions, fennel, white beans and fresh rosemary. It is just amazingly good each time I make it. You can puree the beans, or keep them whole (I like to do a combo so it has texture). It is so delicious. Alicia’s book looks awesome!

  215. Robbie

I have heard about Alicias book but not had the opportunity to read it. I imagine it must be filled with wonderful information.
My favorite vegan recipe is sweet potato/apple soup. It is wonderful comfort food and so filling!
It is cooked in a veggie broth base and add sweet potatos, fuji or braeburn apples, carrots, onions and at the end add cinnamon(i use quite a bit!)
Ahhhh, heaven and it makes your whole house smell amazing!!!!
Then IF you have room for dessert, baked peaches with brown sugar and topped with almond flour…mmmmmm…I’m hungry! ;)
Thanks for the awesome give away ;)

  216. Kris

My favorite vegan recipe is from you, Elana, but I couldn’t find it on your site just now. At least I’m pretty sure I got it from your site. Its a mixture of almond flour, coconut, pepitas, sunflower seeds, coconut oil, a little salt and a little vanilla. Mine doen’t stick together in a bar too well, so I eat it by the handful. It reminds me of granola.

  217. Stacie

I love Thai curry vegetable soup and quinoa stuffed grilled poblanos. Yum!

  218. Darkhorse

Would have to be a fruit smoothie or sweet potato oven fries. Thanks Elana!

  227. Jennifer

I love making vegan cookies because you get to eat the batter! I have a great recipe for vegan coconut cashew cookies.

  228. Tracy

I was vegetarian for a couple of years. I did a competition that required I eat meat, veggies and a little fruit to lean out. I thought the meat was going to kill me coupled with a minimal amount of fruit. Was shocked at how much younger I looked and felt. Amazing how we can find a new way and thrive despite our belief systems. Guacamole and veggies are a definite favorite.

  229. Holly Ellerton

My latest favorite meal is Quinoa with roasted sweet potatoes, roasted almonds. I will add various spices, or nuts depending on my mood… curry powder, cardamon, and cinnamon were in my last one. I have used balsamic vinegar dressings, cayenne pepper, cumin… whatever you like works well.

  238. Jennifer Larkin

I saw Alicia on Oprah last year or so, and was impressed with both her passion for healthy eating and her knowledge on the subject. She was joyful and energetic, and that’s as good a testament to healthy eating as you can find.

  239. I am not vegan myself, but since my boyfriend decided to start eating vegan a few months ago, I have been cooking mostly vegan meals. My favorite one so far is one that I posted on my blog. It is gluten free, vegan 5 layer dip (which I used as taco filling in sprouted corn tortillas. It uses almond cheese, walnut and mushroom “vegan ground meat”, and all the usual naturally vegan ingredients of a 5 or 7 layer dip. Here is the recipe: http://stuffifeedbrian.blogspot.com/2011/03/versatile-vegan-5-layer-or-7-layer-taco.html

  288. Jessica Elise @ evolving-wellness.com

I followed a vegan diet for about 8 years and although I now eat a more moderate diet I still regularly cook and eat vegan dishes. One of my favorite vegan recipes is an extremely easy to make banana bread which I modified into a vegan and gluten free recipe many years back. My fiance absolutely loves when I bake this bread and because it is so super easy and delicious I want to share it with you here.

    3 very ripe bananas
1/3 cup of honey or agave
1 2/3 cups flour – Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free flour
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 tsp baking soda
    2 Tbsp virgin coconut oil
    3/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 cup chopped vegan chocolate chips (optional)

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Puree bananas in a food processor or mash with a fork and then add the honey or agave and continue to blend. Sift the flour, salt, and baking soda together in one bowl. Add the flour to the banana mixture and stir. Then add the coconut oil and nuts/chocolate if using.

Use coconut oil to grease a round 9 inch pan and bake for about 40 minutes. Check to see if bread is finished by inserting a toothpick. Keep the middle slightly moist.

    Enjoy!

  289. Christine

  293. Erica

Any dish involving butternut squash, avocado, and chickpeas!

  294. Melanie Tapp

A few years ago I had a miscarraige from an unplanned pregnancy. My husband and I were not trying for children, so then after we lost one I was devestated. From there I lost motivation to keep myself up. I haven’t been depressed, I just didn’t care about keeping my body in shape. I finally came to a breaking point recently and realized I had to get myself back into shape. Part of this has involved a (partially) vegan and gluten free lifestyle. My husband and I are entertainers, so when I look for new recipes it is important for me to find recipes that I can convince my friends to eat as well. I refuse to make healthy food for just myself, everyone else needs it to! I may just have to hide the ingredient list! My favorite vegan recipe is for Strawberry Chocolate Chip Muffins. You use vegan chocolate chips, rice milk, ener-g egg replacer. They are scrumptious! And perfect for my weekly sunday morning brunch after church!!

  295. Olivia

Thanks for the giveaway! I’m not vegan but I love vegetarian dishes like garlic spinach pasta!

  296. Catherine DeLoach

Thanks for this opportunity! I would love to win her book! I love vegan foods including hummus, guacamole, and tofu stir fry dishes. I also love your chia seed pudding. :)

  297. Mary Harris

I would like to try vegan. Don’t think I could eat that way all the time but should more often

  298. Barbara

I’ve been interested in this book for quite some time and would really love to get it. Sounds like it has lots of fantastic meal ideas and recipes. Thanks for the opportunity.

  299. My favourite vegan dish is a hearty veggie chili with chunky vegetables. I pair it with a (dairy-free) cornbread. It helps that my toddler daughter is allergic to milk, as it forces me to be creative with recipes and I often turn to vegan recipes for help.

  300. I’m not a Vegan but I’m working on incorporating more raw foods into my diet…I’m a total dessert junkie and I love the fact that I can make desserts that do contain health benefits for me. Love Love Love all the nuts I’m learning to use in different ways. I mean who knew you could make icecream out of cashews and it would be DELICIOUS!!

  301. Favorite vegan recipe would have to be plain ol’ kale chips!

  302. Holly C.

I’m really struggling to put balanced meals out for my family. I’m in a funk I think. Could use some inspiration. My favorite vegan dish is Kale Salad…YUM!

  303. Debra Soderman

Although I’m not vegan, I’d like to eat more vegan (healthy) dishes. Right now I’m addicted to good homemade hummus eaten with cucumber slices. Yum!

  304. Kim

I love Fudge Babies! I just made them last week. Very yummy!

  305. Johanne

    I love veggies and hummus

  306. De

I think this book will be great! I plan to probably purchase this book anyway.

  307. Kayla

My favorite vegan dish would have to be vegan cheesecake made with tofu that I make every year on Thanksgiving as well as for special family events because both my brother and I can’t eat animal products.

  308. Danielle

I’ve lived a vegan lifestyle for over four years. I also love foods from all cultures, especially Indian and Ethiopian. My favorite recipes tend to be spicy vegetable curries. I also make a mean lemon cake layered with lemon curd and buttercream frosting. It’s definitely a sometimes food, but soooo good!

  309. ClaireroseC

I love anything with veggies, nut butter, and cocoa.hehe…I’m starting to crave those fudge babies.hehe…

  310. Brandi B

coconut milk mint cookie dough ice cream (minus the choc chips:)

  311. I am not a vegan – I eat fish and eggs – but I try to buy local, organic, and sustainable food and plants make up the majority of my diet. Pretty much all of my favorite foods are vegan: Roasted sweet potatoes with toasted pecans, granola sweetened with carob and served with almond milk, and this time of year grilled vegetables (onions, asparagus, zucchnini, artichokes, eggplant, etc). Of course, nothing beats fresh baby greens tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar!

  312. Caroline @ chocolate and carrots @ chocolateandcarrots.com

I once had a vegan chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and it was incredible. Better than any ‘regular’ chocolate peanut butter cake. Yum!

  313. Luta

My favorite vegan dish is grilled asparagus.

  314. Abby

I LOVE the brown rice crispie treats from this cookbook. I would love to have it so I could try more!

  315. Natalie

One of the first vegan dishes I made was brown rice with baked tofu marinated in Bragg’s and garlic, very tasty!

  316. Michelle

I love tempeh marinated with fresh ginger, chillies and sauteed in coconut oil with a dandelion salad.

  317. I love mushroom soup! :)

  318. Gayle Martin @ comingsoon!!

Carrot frys and a must in my home with picky kids. If it weren’t for those and kale chips, my girls would go days with eating veggies.

  319. Noel

lentil soup — and your vegan chocolate chip cookies –
    and avacadoes — and artichokes.

    yum!

    : )
    Noel

  320. Judie Witney

I jokingly refer to myself as a gluten free, bean and zucchini free, egg free, meat eating vegan! An oxymoron I know, but that is what is available and safe for me to eat.

I eat lots of naturally vegan dishes, but my favorite vegan treat is Coconut icecream, chocolate hazelnut………..mmmmmmm

  321. Anita

My favourite vegan dip is No-Bean Hummus. Seriously tastes like Hummus but has no chickpeas, just zuchinni, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, sea salt, cumin. From my fave book RAWvolution!

  322. Joan

My favorite vegan recipe is the Vegan Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream. My whole family l-o-o-oves it!

  323. Tori

Fudge Babies! Made these recently and took a couple to work. I didn’t know it but a parent was treating the teachers to goodies that morning. She didn’t have anything vegan though and my co-teacher was so sad! I pulled these out of my bag and brought a big smile to her face. It felt good!

  324. I was a vegan for a LONG time, but now I too eat meat and fish. Just found out that I have celiacs disease and I’m always looking new recipes to cook and inspire me.

  325. KellyBelly

    Hi
I have checked The Kind Life out of the library a number of times. I like how she has the book broken into easy to follow sections of just starting out to superhero status. My favortie is her peanut butter cups for a treat. I’m not at the superhero status ;)

  326. jess

every meal is a vegan meal in my kitchen and i love food so much that generally, the last thing i ate becomes my favourite meal! tonight it was oven-roasted sweet potatoes with daiya & a miso gravy, topped with fresh cilantro… as close to poutine as i get up here in northern ontario!

  327. Shannon

While I am not a vegan, I am working on eating more whole foods since being diagnosed with celiac about six months ago. I am enjoying many naturally vegan dishes, but one that I frequently crave- veggie kabobs on the grill. Great, now I’m hungry… :)

  328. Lauren

I’ve heard great things about her book! My favorite vegan dish is steamed kale over any type of grain. And your gluten-free, chocolate chip vegan cookies are to die for

  329. Damselfly

I can’t be a vegan because of my soy (and wheat) allergy but to me there was nothing better than a soy (Boca) burger on a bum with lots of ketsup! I would love to win alicia’s book to get some ideas on how to be a better vegetarian.

  330. Nanny M

I love quinoa (especially with peanut sauce), as well as these rosemary sweet potato fries my sister makes (super addicting!). For a dessert it would be a coconut milk chocolate ice cream I make.

  331. nicole

    i love vegan chili!

  332. Maria

In our house, there are many. Tostadas (without the cheese, it’s vegan) with Spanish rice and refried beans – and my own homemade salsa – makes everyone the happiest. I’m personally quite fond of falafel and hummus, and I love using tofu in our meals. And I can eat loads of kale.

Basically, any dish that is made using whole, healthful foods would get my vote these days.

  333. LisaLou

    Sweet potato fries!

  334. robin

My husband & I were vegan for about 6 months & really enjoyed living that way, but it was very difficult & something we just couldn’t maintain during such a busy point in our lives. We still make a handful of vegan dishes though & I’d say my favorite is the vegan “sour cream” enchiladas: a ton of roasted veggies, some roasted chiles, a ton of cilantro & green enchilada sauce. So yummy!!! We’ve made it for all our meat-eating friends & family & it gets praise from just about everyone.

  335. I LOVE your Vegan Vanilla Icecream! I made some the other day for my mom for her birthday… it was a total hit (again!) Yum….

  336. Natalie @ perrysplate.com

Hmm… a big pile of roasted vegetables and couscous. :)

  337. lajuana

I am not vegan, but do know the health benefits from eating that way..I would say my favorite vegan dish so far would be the pineapple popsicles I make for my kids..yeah, I’m just a kid at heart :)

  338. mickey

I love the power bars made with pecans, cranberries & dates. They are a great treat after work!

  339. Mackenzie

I would love this book! T

  340. Jenn B

I love making vegan pie crust with coconut oil. Yum!

  341. Shawna

My favorite vegan dish is actually just a beautiful green veggie salad with roasted hazelnuts and fresh herbs.

  342. laura @ glutton for nourishment @ gluttonfornourishment.wordpress.com

the vegan pumpkin scones from veganomicon. love them!

  343. Sara

I have been wanting her book for a while! Right now I am loving a dish that I learned from one of my favorite herbalists. Wild rice with arame.

  344. Sunbutter ice cream is a fantastic vegan treat! I also love your vegan herb crackers!

  345. Kelly

My favourite vegan dish is green salad with homemade sprouts and homemade balsamic vinegar. Variety of lettuces, cos, kale, spinach, butter lettuce, mixed green leaves. Then I sprout mung beans, dulse, sesame seeds, chickpeas, lentils. Balsmic vinegarette: balsamic vinegar, olive oil, flaxseed oil, then I grab a leaf of all different heabs finely chop and sprinkle. The sprouts give it density, and the different herbs make is aromatic!! Yum!

  346. Anisa

My favorite vegan recipe is a marinated bean salad. It’s so versatile. It can be eaten by itself. You can grind it in the food processor and make it a dip. You can add Veganaise to it and serve it warm over GF pasta. Serve it over baked potatoes. Endless possibilities and yummy!

  347. MaryBeth

Borscht. I could eat it everyday. Thanks!

  348. Beth Leonard

My favorite vegan dish are sweet potato fries!

    Thank you!

  349. Linda

it is IMPRESSIVE what Alicia does to bring awareness to important issues, that we all could actively support :-)
it is easy to shy away, but put herself out-there, and I admire that
My favorite vegan dish must be FRESH (or frozen) artichoke cooked al dente with coconut cream, with a pinch of all spice and cinnamon and twist of lemon juice. UHM!

  350. Kim

Love LOVE LOVE sweet potato fries!!!

  351. Alanda

My favorites are coconut milk, coconut ice cream and yam fries with garlic. yummy!!

  352. Laura

Hi Elana.. I love your site and seeing all your new recipes! I found this site through a customer who came through my line in the grocery store, and have been a follower ever since. Also, I am a fresh new vegan, since about October 2010! I love it alot and have learned to cook much more for myself and my favorite dish so far has been a coconut curry with basmati rice, tofu, and veggies!

  353. Nancy Geraci @ Alanapantry

I have a great desert recipe with almond milk, figs & quinoa. It comes out like a pudding.

  354. Nichole

I love all things fresh, and am eagerly awaiting the season of the farmer’s market in my area…if I am feeling indulgent, I whip up a batch of gluten-free carrot pumpkin muffins sprinkled with turbinado sugar, which remind me the carrot cake my mother used to make for special occasions.

  355. Naama

My favourite vegan dish is fresh vegetables salad. The best is one that made by a man (they just do it slowly and good. women are practical).
My grandfather can’t deliver from underground, my brother and father are far away. My husband does it great but normally I cook around here… :-)

  356. Kelli

I don’t buy convience foods, so I am lovin’ making a double batch of Fudge Babies and having them in the fridge for when I am “hungry right now”. I borrowed The Kind Diet from the library, and it has an amazing veriation on rice crispy treats that I believe are gluten-free.

  357. Sara

I’m calling this my favorite vegan dish because it’s the vegan dish my whole family of 7 enjoys: Texas Caviar on home fried corn tortillas or fresh baked bread.
PS – I’ve got almond butter blondies in the oven right now for my daughter’s 14th birthday!

  358. Leslie

My favorite vegan dish is cilantro pesto. Uses no cheese & very little oil. The toasted pine nuts take care of the oil & the nuttiness eliminates the need for cheese. Yum!

  359. Dr. Debra @ drdebratibbitts.com

My favorite hands-down is Green Smoothies!

  360. Sarah

    Coconut ice cream for sure!!!!!!!

  361. Starla mercer @ Www.tastehealth.net

I love to make tacos! I’m vegan, gluten free, soy free and organic. Last night I made “fish” tacos with hearts of palm dredged in Cajun spices topped with spicey pastachio salsa and micro greens! I love being a gluten free vegan!!!

  362. Barbara

    Right up my food alley

  363. Jenna

I love to make quinoa salad with my favorite veggies and yummy dressing. I am not vegan, but my 6 year old is a self proclaimed vegetarian so I have been having lots of fun learning about healthy plant protein.

  364. Suzette

What can be more delicious than unadulterated, roasted vegetables? Nutty, crisp, roasted deliciousness! On the sweet side, fudge babies and vegan coconut milk icecream top my list, but I am hot to trot to try my hand at vegan cheesecake. Yummy!

  365. Being a vegan, there are too many to list, but top 3 are
    1. Raw Key Lime Pie. It’s full of healthy fats, vitamin C and lots of nuts and fiber.
    2. Gluten-free, vegan lemon coconut cookies. Lots of fiber, healthy fats, and good enough for my meat-eating, conventional friends.
    3. ANY roasted vegetable.

  366. I think my chocolate coconut hazelnut nut butter, whcih transforms into a fudge-like treat in the fridge :)

  367. julie machen @ machen.net

My family’s favorite vegan food is raw borsht. We use a recipe from Gabrielle Chavez and Victoria Boutenko’s The Raw Food Gourmet. We substitute homemade raw craut [made from body ecology starter] for the plain cabbage. If you are really short on time it’s the perfect thing to whip up.

  368. Diana Drue

My favorite vegan dish is Julia Child’s ratatouille recipe. All the different vegetables have their own lovely tastes and textures. My mother never liked eggplant until she had this dish. Cooking the vegetables separately is key as the vegetables cook at different rates. The beauty is the culmination of when they are combined. The only changes I make are to use red bell pepper instead of green and to include herbs de provence. It definitely is a labor of love.
Thanks Elena for your generosity in offering a copy of Alicia’s book.

  369. Daphne

I have all the ingredients now to make the Spicy Power Bars. I’m excited about trying these as the picture and the recipe looks so tempting and “good for you”. Thanks, Elana for another wonderful yet simple and wholesome recipe.

  373. Tuuli

I try to eat vegan food much/most of the time, so my list of favourites gets long. Right now perhaps maki rolls, with avocado.

  374. JT

I love any vegan dish w/ SOBA noodles~!!! (*SLuuuuRP!*) :D~~

  375. My favorite vegan recipe is miso soup. It is my absolute go-to comfort food with soft tofu and fresh spinach and some rice noodles, yum! Best of all my two year old loves it too!

  376. Jessie

A very large salad of spinach & romaine topped with salsa, nutritional yeast, calamata olives and walnuts. Delicious.

  379. Wendy Bussell

I just love roasted ratatouille from a Moosewood cookbook. The vegies all hot and sweet, the basil fresh and raw, create a wonderful texture of tastes!

  380. Laura Childs @ noneatthismoment

I love black bean cakes with a mango salsa. Yummy!

  381. Kate H.

I love the lentil soup! Love it!

  382. shani

I am loving experimenting and making my own version of larabars. I just made a salty, walnut, cranberry. The perfect balance of sweetness from dates and a bit of salt roasted seeds.

  383. Lori L.

A great spinach salad with strawberries, pine nuts, oil and vinegar is on my everyday lunch menu. So simple, but so fresh and delicious! Thank you for the giveaway :)

  384. Heather Mathena @ hmathena1.blogspot.com

I love anything made with almond meal :)

  385. Cecelle

Favourite vegan recipe? Has to be Greek lentil soup — lentils, carrots, tomatoes, veggie broth, onions, spinach, peppercorns and a huge handful of parsley, simmered and topped off right before serving with some lemon juice or red wine vinegar. I always feel healthier after eating it.

  386. Green Shushi @ greenshushi.com

I’ve wanted to buy this book for a while! I love to have veggie rolls wrapped in collard greens leaves, dipped in soy sauce mixed with sesame oil. Yum!

  387. Lana

Would love to try the cookbook, sounds healthy & delicious!

  388. My favorite vegan dish is definitely a Middle Eastern platter of falafel, baba ganoush, hummus, Israeli salad.

  389. chrissy ciaccio

My first alternative introduction to vegan principles and recipes began fifteen years ago when a friend accidentally left a book at my house after an afternoon visit. John Robbins ‘Diet for A New America’ changed my life…. one of my favorite cruelty and gluten free recipes is his peanut sauce, which I serve over broccoli and or Tinkyada brown rice spaghetti. I substitute almond or cashew butter, and I use this as a “treat” meal since I can’t eat nuts very often. More recently I have discovered ‘The Body Ecology Diet’ by Donna Gates, helping me tremendously with the lifestyle changes I needed to overcome reoccurring candidiasis. Her Creamy Cauliflower Soup is a staple in my diet- it’s alkaline, nutritious and an incredibly satisfying addition to a meal or as a stand alone soup year round. The “creamy” part just means pureed -no need for milk!

  390. Jenn Mendyk

I have to say that the Fudge Babies are a new recent favourite of mine. I made them last weekend and they have helped me get through the work week not snacking on unhealthy stuff. I will definitely put them on the regular recipe list and share it with friends!

  391. Carson Fixmer @ none

My favorite vegan recipe is Beet Burgers from Color Me Vegan by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. All of her recipes/vegan info. from The Vegan Table, The Joy of Vegan Baking and Color Me Vegan are loaded with absolutely delicious vegan fare. Officially a vegan for just over a year, this has been the BEST time of my “cooking life” exploring new ingredients, seasoning, textures and freedom to look at food preparation and planning in a brand new way. That says a lot because I am 57 years old and have always considered cooking an art form: whether it was for my family, entertaining friends, or trying new recipes. This lifestyle change was influenced and informed by my four adult children; three vegans and one vegetarian…..how great is that!! Even my carivore husband has become”veganist”; when he is with me, at any rate.

  392. Angie

    Coconut milk ice cream…any flavor!

  393. MandaRae

My favorite recipe is for carrot fries. I have been Gluten-free for 5 years now but just recently have been put on a corn and potato-free diet in addition to GF. French fries were one of my favorite foods so this a a great (and a much healthier) substitution!

  394. Jill

our families favorite vegan food is green smoothies! We all had them yesterday for breakfast. Feels good that my 4 children had spinach, kale, collard greens, banana, strawberries, peaches, raspberies and blueberries to fill up their tummies….and they all drank them down without complaint!

  395. Stephanie

My favorite Food: Deborah Madison’s Greens & Potatoes. I make my own version now–boil potatoes in a pot, steaming Kale above. Then saute onion/garlic/leek (whatever allium came in the CSA box for the week except red onion) in olive oil, add the Kale and potatoes. If the potatoes are starchy, mush them up like a hash. If they are fresh-dug, leave them in bite-sized pieces. Somehow it tastes different every time!

  396. Annaliese Foote

    Roasted red pepper hummus!

  397. Jennifer

Spinach salad with toasted almonds, vinegarette dressing, and cranberries. YUM!!!

  398. Carla W.

My sister just started to eat Vegan and I must say she made the best homemade S’mores from the Babycakes cookbook.

  399. Nury

    Artichoke pate!

  402. Kassia

I have so many favorite vegan foods- any roasted veggie, green smoothies, chai icecream made with cocnut milk and maple syrup… yum!! I woul love to win this book!

  403. My husband and I made grilled chickpea sandwiches (to replace grilled cheese) with tomato soup last night and LOVED IT. Since we’re new to the diet we’re slowly adding new and tasty recipes. We make an asparagus quiche that we really love and the best black bean burgers! I’m a follower of Alicia’s blog and rented her book from the library when we were first transition! I’d love to have it on my bookshelf.

  404. Jen P

Any kind of vegetable oven roasted or grilled, maybe with a little olive oil or salt.

  405. I would have to say that the fudge babies are my fave!!!!

  406. Cindy Cundiff

Come Mother’s Day or Birthday, my family always have a hard time making dinner because I don’t have a favorite. This M. Day they made – Portobella Mushrooms stuffed with Quinoa. I also make a lasagna with zucchini as noodles with cashew cream sauce and various veges in between the layers. And being of Puerto Rican decend, I love my rice and beans. Thanks Elana!

  407. Sylvia

Sweet potato fries are my fave

  410. Lea

My favorite vegan food… fruit salad. Not very elaborate, i know. but – so what?

  411. sophie

My favourite vegan item is salad made up of arugula, spinach, boston lettuce, fennel with hemp seeds and or/chia seeds with a lovely vinaigrette: grapeseed oil + toasted sesame seeds oil + apple cider vinegar + smoked paprika + sea salt + turmeric. Very good! AND…your pumpkin custard – using agar agar instead of gelatin!
Alicia Silverstone’s book looks great!!!!! Thanks for doing this giveaway!

  412. RebeccaUtah

I’m not vegan, but would LOVE this book! I’m on a black bean and sweet potato kick right now. Can’t wait to try some new recipes. Thank you!

  413. Elizabeth Mullen

I have considered going vegan for quite some time now. I have fibromyalgia and a lot of stomach problems. I probably would have switched earlier but my husband is a true carnivore and has to have his meat! Unfortunately he is very overweight and has diabetes. I would like to cook good vegan recipes so that we could both work our way back to better health. I started cooking with “Recipes For A Small Planet” back in high school, so have always leaned towards vegetarian. Hmmm…favorite recipes? So many…Thai peanut sauce over udon noodles, Butternut and sweet potatoe soup, Green soup, Salad greens with craisins, walnuts and raspberry vinegrette. Thanks for sharing all you do.

  414. Hetaher

A Quinoa tabouli recipe I made last night–my whole family loved it, even my 5 year old! Here is the link: http://www.glutenfreediva.com/2011/01/quinoa-tabouli/

  415. Lindsay Cowley

I love sunflower seed dip. It’s raw and vegan and saved me when I went on a restricted diet… I also love raw cashew cream.

    Both are awesomely delicious!!!

  416. I love the Garlic Ginger Bok Choy! Then again, how could you go wrong with that combination? :o)

  417. anita z

I am a fan of tofu cheesecake! No cheese…just tofu! Yummy!

  418. I’ve been on a bean kick lately. I really like anything with white beans lately. So I would say a white bean salad, or a white bean with basil hummus. Yum!

  419. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing @ nourishingflourishing.com

My favorite vegan dish is the lentil Sloppy Joe recipe I have posted on my blog. I surprised myself with that one! : )

  420. Erica S.

  421. stephanie

Lately my favorite vegan recipe is chocolate kale chips!!! Also love banana nut kale chips! MMM!!!

  422. nicole

I am a huge cheese fan, but unfortunately lactose intolerent. Just recently I discoved a vegan nacho cheese recipe that is actually GOOD! Cashews, red pepper, nutritional yeast, etc. Yum! I used it on kale chips (dehyrated).

  423. Heather L.

I’ve been vegan for quite a while (and it sure helped make my transition easier after the CD diagnosis). I have so many favorite vegan meals, it’s difficult to choose just one, but if I had to choose one that would satisfy the pickiest of eaters, it would be iri dofu. I could probably eat it every day of my life and still think it was tasty.

  424. Deborah

My favorite vegan food is a tofu pumpkin pie. I found a great recipe ona vegan website and it is delicious.

  425. Melissa

Lately, my favorite thing to enjoy has been quinoa tabbouleh. I’m going to go and make some right now!

  426. Becky O

    Veggies- any way, any kind!

  427. Michelle Millburn

This is my favorite! It’s a recipe a came up with for my vegan daughter! So yummy!

    Sweet Black Beans and Rice
    (Michelle Millburn)
2 c cooked brown or Jasmine rice
1 can black beans – drained and rinsed well (or 2 cups cooked from dry)
1 medium sweet Vidalia onion, chopped
    3 small, tart apples, chopped
    1 can light coconut milk
    2 T canola oil
    1 – 3 t red curry (to taste)

Cook onion on medium low heat in canola oil until caramelized (sweet and translucent). Add apples and cook until just tender (I like a little bit of crunch ) Turn to low and add beans and rice. Mix curry into milk and pour over rice and beans mix, mixing gently.  Cook until bubbly and warm through.  Serve in a bowl with spiral slices of fresh apple on top and garlic pita chips and a mixed green salad on
    the side.
