Rosh Hashanah Dinner
Posted By Elana Amsterdam On September 19, 2008 @ 8:59 pm In holiday | 11 Comments
Lately I have received many requests for a gluten free Rosh Hashanah menu. People are asking what I will serve for this celebration of the Jewish New Year and so I am posting my dinner plans more than a week ahead of the actual holiday. You people really know how to get me organized!
I make a habit of serving rich, seasonal and of course, gluten free fare at all of my family’s festive celebrations; below is a list of dishes that we will be feasting upon on erev Rosh Hashanah, Monday, September 29th.
We begin our Rosh Hashanah meal with a prayer and apples dipped in honey, to symbolize a sweet start to the new year. According to Wikipedia, “various other foods with a symbolic meaning may be served, depending on local minhag (custom); the use of apples and honey is a late medieval Ashkenazi addition, though it is now almost universally accepted.”
Another traditional food eaten during this holiday is honey cake (lekach), and several of you have requested a recipe for this delicious dessert. Please stay tuned, I will try to have one ready for you before the holiday and will then link it back to this post for your convenience.
In the meantime, happy planning for your festivities!
