White Hot Chocolate

Posted on December 28, 2013

Brew up a cup of this rich and creamy White Hot Chocolate made with real raw cacao butter and relax by the fire.

I’ve wanted to create a White Hot Chocolate recipe for just about as long as I can remember. When bought at a coffee shop or elsewhere, White Hot Chocolate is generally one of those uber sweet drinks made with far more sugar than my system can handle.

After creating a bunch of Paleo Christmas Cookie recipes this past month I’m ... read more →

Mojito Green Juice

Posted on August 16, 2013

Beat the summer heat with this refreshingly healthy green drink.

I have a new favorite green juice recipe. Although I’ve never done a full on green juice diet or green juice detox, I think that green juice has major benefits and drink it several days every week. I feel so healthy when I get a big bowl of vegetables into my diet, in liquid form, in addition to the veggies I eat all day long.

I found a mojito green juice recipe ... read more →

Citrus Smash

Posted on May 22, 2013

The Citrus Smash is a fresh juice that my younger son created and photographed on his own.

Looking for a refreshing way to start your day? Look no further. My younger son presents you with his Citrus Smash (which he both created and named). He loves using our juicer before going to school and after dinner to make delicious fresh fruit juices from scratch.

This fresh squeezed orange juice, spiked with grapefruit and lemon, is packed with vitamin C and bioflavonoids. He ... read more →

Simple Green Juice made with just three ingredients (cucumber, parsley, and lemon) is ultra refreshing.

Crockpot Hot Toddy

Posted on December 16, 2012

Healthy Hot Toddies for the holidays offer a cup of pure deliciousness in a sea of junk food.

The perfect drink for your neighborhood Christmas cookie exchange or New Year’s Eve party, I serve these healthy Hot Toddies to both adults and children, and sometimes I make ‘em as an after school treat for the boys and the gaggle of friends they bring home.

It is best to start making this spicy, warming drink several hours before you plan to serve it ... read more →

How to Make Pumpkin Spice Lattes

Posted on October 17, 2012

Filled with freshly ground cinnamon and other antioxidant rich spices, I serve healing Pumpkin Spice Lattes piping hot.

Now you can make your own dairy free Pumpkin Spice Latte with coconut milk instead of cow’s milk. Make this beverage low sugar as well by using honey and stevia in place of refined sugar. I based my recipe on the Pumpkin Spice Latte from recipegirl.com. Lori’s site, gorgeous and hip, is a wonderful source of inspiration.

Did you ever wonder what’s in Starbucks ... read more →

Mint Chip Protein Shake

Posted on August 21, 2012

Mint Chip Protein Shake, full of hemp seeds and kale to power you through the day.

I love a good protein shake. I don’t love eating a lot of protein sans vegetables or fruit. This shake solves that issue with a healthy handful of kale. Yes, you heard me, kale.

I’ve had this gluten free, dairy free protein shake for breakfast the last three days in a row. I used kale that I picked from my garden. Starting the day off with ... read more →

Breakfast Power Smoothie

Have you seen Hallie Klecker’s new book The Pure Kitchen?

This cookbook is a lovely collection of healthy gluten free, dairy free recipes. I absolutely love the “Energizing Breakfasts” section which contains quick and easy smoothie recipes full of superfoods; the book also contains wonderful recipes such as Spring Pesto Drizzle, which is packed with healthy greens.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hallie at a conference last year, and can assure you she is every bit as lovely in person ... read more →

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Posted on December 2, 2011

Homemade and dairy free Peppermint Hot Chocolate to keep you warm and cozy on a cold winter’s night.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate is easy to make, and far better than the instant hot chocolate that comes in a package, which is loaded with sugar and definitely not dairy free. Additionally, I find this soothing and healthy beverage to be a great substitute for all of the peppermint candy floating around this time of year.

I make this dairy free hot chocolate with coconut ... read more →

Peanut Butter Protein Shake

Posted on August 4, 2011

This dairy free peanut butter protein shake is a great way to start the day.  I like to drink it before I go to the gym –the protein (about 50 grams) gives me energy during my entire workout, and then some.

I’ve been on a major peanut butter kick lately, in fact, this is my third gluten free peanut butter recipe in the last week or so.  Earlier, I posted my Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies, after that I posted ... read more →

Iced Ginger Chai

Posted on July 7, 2011

I love a good cool, yet spicy drink in the summer.  This Iced Ginger Chai recipe is based on one of my favorite products, Bhakti Chai.  It’s heavy on the ginger, cardamom and black pepper which I love.

While I love Bhakti Chai, it does not like me; there is way too much caffeine in this drink for my body type (vata). Even the decaffeinated product contains small amounts of caffeine, so in my version, I use roiboos tea as ... read more →

Ginger Lime Mocktail

Posted on May 31, 2011

Spicy ginger and tart lime team up to make a mean mocktail.

I don’t drink alcohol, however, I absolutely love fun, girly drinks in fancy glasses.  Hence, this deliciously refreshing, non-alcoholic beverage that I am calling a Ginger Lime Mocktail.  I think you could also call this sparkling zesty drink liquid superfood.  The ginger is full of anti-oxidants, good for digestion and is also anti-viral and anti-fungal.  The lime juice is packed with Vitamin C and bioflavanoids.

Today was our first beautiful ... read more →

Dandelion Root Coffee

Posted on February 22, 2011

With March approaching, I’m starting to think about the possibility of a spring detox and one of my favorite healing roots –dandelion. Dandelion is a fantastic liver cleanser and spring is the perfect season for liver support.

According to Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, dandelion root has bitter, sweet and cooling properties, making it optimal for the pitta dosha.

Although I use various parts of the dandelion for healing, here, I’m focusing on the root which is a good blood purifying herb. ... read more →

Mexican Hot Chocolate

Posted on January 20, 2011

We had a huge snowstorm here last night and I made my family a batch of this warming Mexican Hot Chocolate.  A hot drink is perfect for a cold day, and it’s even better when warming spices such as cinnamon, chili and cayenne are added.

There is a ton of cinnamon in this recipe, so if you’re not a cinnamon fan, you might want to reduce the amount from 1 tablespoon to 1 teaspoon.  Why do I use so much cinnamon?  ... read more →

Kale Creamsicle

Posted on October 6, 2010

This dark green, luscious shake is my go to drink when I need a little protein pick me up.

To me, the flavor of the kale is not that pronounced, what comes through is the creamy richness of the protein powder with the tart sweetness of the orange, thereby forming a yummy gluten-free, dairy-free creamsicle experience in a glass.  Enjoy!

Green Lemonade

Posted on April 23, 2010

After last weeks Almond Joy Chocolate Bark post, I received this message on my Facebook Page from Suzanne Hodgman Hodsden:

That’s really nice, but what about some healthy recipes for us health nuts!

Quite a lot of interesting comments followed hers and a good debate was had by all –except me, I just post the recipes and try to stay out of the debates. And furthermore, while I don’t spend a good deal of time on Facebook, I must confess, I ... read more →

Strawberry Lime Shake

I’m loving this gluten free, dairy free Strawberry Lime Shake made of fresh homemade coconut milk.  My boys love it too.  After I took a picture of the shake yesterday and placed it in the fridge, the boys grabbed it greedily and drank it all down.  They have a certain penchant for consuming my photo shoots like that.

Here’s the recipe so you can make your own.

DIY Coconut Milk

Posted on April 13, 2010

I hadn’t thought of making coconut milk from shredded coconut until I read Sarma Melngailis’ book Living Raw Food.  I cannot recommend this book highly enough.  Sarma has great recipes and tons of fabulous information for everyone –you don’t have to be raw to enjoy this book.

I also want to recommend Sarma’s products from her company One Lucky Duck.  I haven’t ever met Sarma (or spoken to anyone at her company, I place all of my orders online) however I ... read more →
