Frank Zane’s Protein Powder Piña Colada

Posted under beverages on September 22, 2009

I love making smoothies for myself and the boys.  During the last few months, several people have asked me what kind of protein powder I use in my frozen drinks.  My favorite protein powder, in fact, the only one I use is made of egg white and stevia and is produced by the incredible Frank

Greeña Colada

Posted under beverages on September 4, 2009

Even though summer is coming to a close, I’m still into my green juices and smoothies; more than ever, in fact.  This is one of my favorites and I owe credit to Meghan Telpner as it is based on one of the recipes from the Green Cleanse on her site.
I’m running out to the airport

Peach Almond Ice Cream

Posted under desserts on July 31, 2009

Peaches are in high season here in Colorado and we are making the most of it.  This week I made a gluten free (of course), fruit sweetened, dairy free, vegan Peach Almond Ice Cream.
To increase the peach factor, I diced up more fresh peaches and mooshed them into the ice cream after it came out

The Great Agave Debate

Posted under desserts on June 26, 2009

“Why do you use agave? I’ve heard that it’s very unhealthy”  I’m asked this question about my “go to” sweetener on at least a daily basis.
First off, there really is no perfect sweetener, so I recommend everything in moderation.
We often take sugar and other sweeteners for granted, forgetting that they were not widely available to

Chocolate Peanut Butter Tart

Posted under desserts on April 7, 2009

How low can you go?!  This gluten free chocolate peanut butter tart is sweetened with a delicious alternative sweetener that I have been enjoying of late –yacon syrup.
This lower glycemic sweetener is derived from the yacon plant which is often referred to as “apple of the earth.”  Yacon is high in fructooligosacharides (FOS), a form

Hot Cocoa

Posted under beverages on October 8, 2008

There was a distinct chill in the air last night which lead me to put on slippers and make a cup of gluten free, dairy free hot chocolate.  This quick and easy beverage can be simply made from scratch in a matter of minutes.
Vegan Hot Cocoa
¼ cup (raw) cashews
1 cup water (room temperature)
1 tablespoon unsweetened

Vanilla Plum Jam

Posted under condiments on September 16, 2008

As fall approaches, my attention is shifting to our fruit trees. A few years back we planted a peach and two apple trees along the perimeter of our packed yard; they are now bursting with fruit, as is our dwarf plum. While we eat the peaches and apples straight off the trees, each

Thai Iced Tea

Posted under beverages on June 3, 2008

We are in the middle of our little league baseball tourney (presently in quarterfinals) and play tonight to see if we can advance to the semis. My older son has been playing first base while the little one is bat boy.
We have had much fun, though it is getting quite competitive and the team

Rosemary Chocolate Truffles

Posted under desserts on May 27, 2008

Last night was the conclusion of a “grand” Memorial Day weekend. My parents came in and took the boys down to the Boulder Creek Fest where they all had a blast. There was much spoiling –meals out, bowling, batting practice at the amusement park and overall non-stop fun. A perfect weekend with

Power Bars

Posted under snacks on February 1, 2008

For the past few months, I have been playing around with power bar recipes. When I’m on the go, I want to grab something that is packed with nutrition, not too sweet and plenty tasty.
I’ve made this power bar recipe a bunch of times now and my taste testers (that would be my husband who

Turning Lemons into Lemonade

Posted under beverages on August 7, 2007

I have been guzzling gallons of my favorite summer beverage during this hot spell. It’s another easy one,
and better yet, has no sugar or artificial sweeteners.
How’s that possible? See for yourself…

Lemonade
2 quarts water
¼ cup lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
4 dropper-fulls stevia

Fill a 2 quart mason jar with water, almost to the top, leaving 2

Splenda: Sweet Smoke and Mirrors

Posted under products on March 13, 2007

In a recent email, my dear friend Pat said, “I am curious to know what your opinion of Splenda may be? It is the only non-caloric sweetener that doesn’t make me feel like I have to brush my teeth after ingesting it. Will it kill me slowly?”
Well Pat, a couple of years ago, one of

Stevia

Posted under products on March 6, 2007

I adore agave nectar, however, there are times when I want something sweet and don’t want to increase my blood sugar level. This is when I reach for stevia, an herb 300 times as sweet as sugar with a glycemic index (GI) of 0.
This low glycemic, low carbohydrate sweetener is widely used in Japan.
